Emissions from Cement Production

CO2 emissions from cement production constitute about 5% of global fossil and industrial totals. China is the world’s largest cement producer at 46%, with India and the United States in second and third place, respectively. In 2005, cement manufacturing accounted for 70-80% of all energy used in non-metallic minerals production. That same year, combined emissions from the chemical processes involved in cement manufacture and fuel-related emissions amounted to 1.8 Gt C02.

According to a 2007 report from the International Energy Agency, “half of the[se] CO2 emissions are due to the chemical reaction in clinker production,” and “are not affected by energy efficiency or fuel switching.” Data from the same source indicates fuel use could be reduced to about 2.5 or 3 EJ using premier technologies and more clinker feedstock substitutes. However, as this would require large investment in capital stock replacement, it is not likely to be realized in the near future.
