About: According to the NDNM

"The Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management is one of five government agencies under the Ministry of the Environment. We serve as an executive and advisory body for the Ministry, and our main areas of responsibility are outdoor recreation and the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. We have a staff of about 300, the majority based in Trondheim. Most of us have university qualifications, and in many cases a scientific background, but we also offer expertise in law, the social sciences, economics and the humanities.

We assist the Government in its environmental protection work at national and international level. We are responsible for implementing the Government’s environmental policy, and for identifying, preventing and dealing with environmental problems.

Our work includes obtaining the data needed for decision-making, and making information on the state of the environment readily accessible. We provide advice and information on action being taken to maintain and enhance the environment, and assist politicians and other decision-makers in the efforts to consider the needs of the environment, nature and outdoor recreation as fully as possible in all their activities.

The Directorate works closely with other authorities and interest groups, and with bodies in sectors such as agriculture, transport, energy and fisheries. Our overall objective is to maintain the diversity of Norway’s nature and landscapes and to ensure sound and sustainable use of the natural environment.

The Norwegian Nature Inspectorate is a separate unit that is responsible for control and inspection to protect the environment and prevent environmental crime, and for other practical management tasks. The Inspectorate’s head office is in Trondheim, and there are local offices throughout the country."
